Breaking News: Three Officers Shot in Southeast DC; Schools Locked Down as Suspect Opens Fire

Washington, D.C., Three Officers Shot — In a harrowing incident that unfolded earlier today, three police officers were shot while responding to a barricade situation in Southeast D.C. The suspect, who remains barricaded inside a residence, continues to open fire, creating a tense standoff with law enforcement.

The Incident

At approximately 9:20 a.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department responded to a residence in the 5000 block of Hanna Place Southeast near Benning Road and the Maryland line. Their initial purpose was to serve an arrest warrant related to cruelty to animals. However, the situation quickly escalated when an individual inside the home refused to come out.

As officers attempted to enter the single-family residence, the suspect began firing shots from within. Surveillance camera footage captured the intense barrage of gunfire, highlighting the danger faced by law enforcement.

Injured Officers and Hospitalization

Three officers sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange of fire. Fortunately, their injuries are not life-threatening, according to D.C. police. A fourth officer was also injured but had not been shot. These brave officers were promptly transported to the hospital for medical attention. Notably, some were taken to the hospital in police vehicles rather than ambulances, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

The Barricade and Lockdown

The shooting suspect remains barricaded inside the house, continuing to defy law enforcement. Several city blocks have been cordoned off, and multiple schools in the vicinity have been placed under lockdown. Among them are Garfield Elementary School on H Street SE and Plummer Elementary School on Texas Avenue SE.

Authorities are diligently working to ascertain the identity of the shooting suspect. While it remains unclear if anyone else is inside the residence, there are concerns that dogs may also be present. Police Chief Pamela A. Smith described the situation as “active” as of 10:20 a.m., urging caution and vigilance.
